Belly binding

Screen Shot 2015-02-19 at 20.10.45Wrapping the belly is so effective and can be an important part of your postpartum journey.  It naturally aids the body to shrink and recover in a shorter period of time. A belly bind provides your postpartum body with complete support to assist abdominal re-attachment, improve your posture, stabilise your loosened ligaments, and provide support to your torso while vital organs return to their pre-pregnancy size and position.

During pregnancy the body retains water, fat, and air which may cause your body to swell and expand. This also includes the organs in the womb area such as the cervix and vagina to also expand and enlarge. The water retained by cells supported the amniotic fluid and the purpose of the air was to cushion your baby, your internal organs, and bones as your centre of gravity shifted and your baby grew. When your baby was born, the excess water, fat, and flatulence are no longer needed and the cells will naturally release and shrink back to their pre-pregnant size.

A postpartum belly bind is a holistic support tool for your abdominal and pelvic organs, including the muscles in the pelvic area. It’s vital that the pelvic floor is supported in the postpartum period.

The belly bind begins level with the public bone and wraps around the hips & ends below the breastbone … see the attached video links.  It provide the cervix, pelvic floor and internal organs with complete support.  The body starts to gently close.

The belly bind is most effective and best used during the first 8 weeks postpartum but can be useful for support any time after childbirth.

For vaginal births including instrumental deliveries … the bind can be used from 48 hours onwards but probably from 4 or 5 days post birth

For c-section births from 4 – 6 weeks onwards …
Please bear in mind that a bind can take between 7-14 days to be made … if you order at least 2 weeks before your due date … 3-4 weeks if you are looking for the tie-dye option ….

Wearing the bind

The belly bind can be worn for a few hours or can be worn all day. Use your discretion.

While it is traditionally worn every day for 40 days during the confinement period of women in the East, we see great results from women wearing it 6-8 hours each day for 2-3 weeks.

C-sectiona mamas …. You will need to wait 4-6 weeks to begin, allowing time for your incision to heal.

See video links below …

Why a belly bind and not just some support pants?

It supports and gently pulls the separated abdominal muscles (diastasis recti) back together

It encourages healing from pelvic/pubic separation (a partial bind during pregnancy can be especially beneficial for pelvic support).  Please ask if you would like to know more.

It supports relaxed and untoned abdominal muscles.

It reduces fluid and air retention in your bowels/abdomen.

It nurtures the mother in a time of vulnerability and healing and she regains confidence in her body.

It may prevent back pain. While wearing it, you are reminded to sit and walk straight, thus avoiding any uncomfortable positions.

It may decrease postpartum bleeding time by helping the body to expedite the process.

In the sadness of a miscarriage or still-birth, belly binding can support the mama and improve emotional healing as it speeds physical healing.

Each time you choose to use your belly bind it is custom fit to your body, not a one size fits all.

Your bind will start at the pubic bone and end on the top of your rib cage, just below your breast. Postpartum girdles that only bind the abdomen also push down on the pelvic floor muscles and organs, potentially causing or worsening pelvic, uterine, or bladder prolapse.
The belly bind supports the ongoing changes in your postpartum body giving you a custom fit.
